Making Mustard, 2016, Digital video, 10'15"

In the early spring, the Bay Area is covered with wild mustard. The invasive weed creates a brilliant display in vineyards, empty lots, and road embankments alike. This piece plays with a tension between creation and destruction in reaction to the presence of the mustard plant. Using trashcans found on site, the figure proceeds to mow the lawn, so to speak. He becomes one with the landscape through its destruction. Or is he absurdly trying to make mustard from this weed?
